Poets choose chair

Artist Helen Birmingham has been elected as the first woman chair of Scarborough Poetry Workshop. A former secondary school teacher, Helen is the first womanto chair the organisation in its 40-year history.

SPW meets every two weeks on Thursdays at the Valley bar on Valley Road, Scarborough. Members are encouraged to develop their own skills by reading and discussing their own work as well as hearing from guest speakers.

Helen said: 'Poetry reflects real lives. While it is important to have tradition and history, there is also a desire in the group to explore and listen to the voices of today.'

Tickets going cheap for early birds

Blue Monday, on 26 January, is supposedly the most depressing day of the new year but the Stephen Joseph Theatre is banishing the blues and spreading the cheer.

For one day only, the public can pick up 60p tickets to the celebratory summer season which includes the return of the company’s 2014 comedy musical Cox & Box – Mrs Bouncer’s Legacy, before it heads out on a national tour, and a special 60th anniversary production of The Woman In Black directed by Robin Herford prior to its West End transfer. Alan Ayckbourn will direct a revival of his 1974 play Confusions and his latest, Hero’s Welcome, and Tim Firth’s Neville’s Island which had its world premiere at the theatre in 1992 will also be revived.

Coast features on screen

A recent bonanza of high profile TV and film activity on the Yorkshire coast looks set to boost tourism in the region, say tourism chiefs. The area has seen unprecedented levels of filming over the past year, from gardening and motoring programmes through TV dramas to movies with internationally known stars.

The big-screen version of Dad’s Army starring Toby Jones, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bill Nighy, Tom Courtenay, Michael Gambon, Mark Gatiss, and the original Private Pike, Ian Lavender, in a cameo role, is currently filming in the Scarborough and Bridlington areas. Scarborough has hosted the production office and construction art department at Scarborough College, and the cast and crew are staying in hotels and apartments in the town.
