Coastival kicking at the Spa

The upcoming Coastival arts event in Scarborough is set to be a huge musical party. Centre stage will be ‘Reverberation’, a celebration of Scarborough’s musical history with both live and DJ music and an exhibition of memorabilia, at the Spa from 8pm on Friday 13 February.

That will be supported throughout the two-day festival by the biggest and best musical line-up Coastival has ever created. Bands taking to the stage for Reverberation will include Tom Townsend, Vertical Dead Quartet, The Pop Pigs, Prendo and Good Friends and local DJs, including Mr Tooley.

A vital part of Reverberation will be the exhibition, which will feature memorabilia and an oral history of Scarborough’s vibrant musical heritage. Coastival has been inundated with fantastic items for the exhibition, including clothes, photos, posters and programmes right up to the door of the stage door night club!

Reverberation kicks off a great weekend of music. On the Saturday evening, there will be ‘Timeless’, a welcome return for some of Coastival’s favourite musicians, from 8pm to 2am, at the Spa Ocean Room. This will include Smoove and Turrell, Nubiyan Twist, The Wonderful Sound of the Cinema Organ, together with Stone Penguin, a 100% vinyl DJ and VJ collective, including Kista, Mister Tooley and Filey Selassie.

Music lovers will also enjoy a new twist on the Coastival favourite the Acoustic Lounge, on Saturday from 2pm to 9pm in Farrer’s Bar at the Spa. A ‘house’ band will play throughout and be joined by guest performers during the event.

Other musical highlights during Saturday will include Backseat Mafia, at the Spa Sun Court Suite from 12noon to 9pm. Backseat Mafia is a Sheffield-born music and entertainment blog and is bringing some of the best new and cutting edge bands to perform at Coastival.

Orchestra brings in top brass

Fresh from his New Year’s Day concert on worldwide television with the Vienna Philharmonic, Ian Bousfield will be heading to Scarborough next month to perform the Trombone Concerto by Nino Rota, a composer best known for his Oscar-winning film scores for the first two Godfather films.

“This is an incredible coup for our orchestra to perform with such a world class musician” said Shaun Matthew, conductor of the Scarborough Symphony Orchestra. “Once again Scarborough’s thriving amateur orchestra will be providing an unforgettable musical occasion for local concertgoers.”
